Matta Rice

Matta Rice, also known as Rosematta rice, Palakkadan Matta rice, Chemba Rice, Kerala Red rice or Red Parboiled rice, is locally sourced from the Palakkad region of Kerala. The rice has a distinct earthly flavour because of the type of soil in which it is cultivated. These paddy fields are called 'poonthalpadam' and the soil contains a lot of clay and silt. Because of these qualities, this kind of paddy fields can retain more water. Used in a wide variety of foods, Matta rice can be had as plain rice, or be used to make idlis, appams and snacks like murukku and kondattam.

Matta Rice or Red Rice is different from Brown Rice and is a healthier option than White Rice. White Rice contains no fiber but Matta Rice contains fiber and also has other nutrients like magnesium and one gram of calcium. It also contains vitamins like Vitamin A and Vitamin B. Matta Rice helps in controlling blood sugar and blood lipids.
