Mapillai Samba or “Bride Groom Rice” is a native variety of rice, which is red in colour and is grown predominantly in Tamil Nadu. It's well suited to organic farming because it is hardy and demands little or no fertilisers or pesticides.
This highly nutritious rice gets its name from the age-old practise of the groom lifting a heavy stone (Ilavatakal) to prove that he is worthy of marrying the bride. The grooms are given this rice regularly to increase stamina and strength before the lift the stone.
